Sailor Moon: A Guide to Every Usagi In the Series

Sailor Moon is a series based heavily on the concept of reincarnation. However, because every new incarnation and transformation looks fairly similar to the last, it might be hard to keep track of every version of Serenity and Usagi Tsukino in the series, especially if you are new to the series and hear someone talk about Princess Serenity in one sentence and Sailor Cosmos in the next.

This is a guide to every Usagi in the series, be they a prior incarnation of the lovable Sailor Moon, a more mature version of her from the future or even Usagi's final incarnation as a literal Goddess. The following list is organized in chronological order of age.

Queen Serenity is not truly an incarnation of Usagi, but she is instrumental in assuring that Usagi would undergo multiple incarnations. As the Queen of the Moon Kingdom during the Silver Millennium, she stood against the forces of Beryl when she and the armies of the Earth tried to overthrow the Moon Kingdom.

When her daughter, Princess Serenity, was killed during the conflict with Beryl (in the '90s anime she's slain during the fight, while in the manga and Crystal she takes her own life), Queen Serenity expends her life using the Silver Crystal to ensure her daughter would be reborn into an era of peace. This establishes a cycle of reincarnation that would continue until the end of the universe.

Princess Serenity is the heir to the Moon Kingdom -- the last royal entitled to the throne. She is Usagi's prior incarnation, destined to rule the stars but cursed by the evil Nehelennia to die young. However, when she meets the Earth Prince Endymion, Usagi falls madly in love. The two lovers, however, are split apart when Queen Beryl attacks the Moon Kingdom.

Princess Serenity and her guardians are reincarnated into the modern era after her demise. However, Usagi can transform back into her Princess Serenity incarnation in her Princess Form, which contains the raw power contained within Serenity.

Usagi Tsukino is a normal girl growing up in Japan, unaware she's the incarnation of Princess Serenity. She ends up assuming the title of Sailor Moon, the Sailor Guardian of peace and love. Usagi ultimately meets the reincarnation of her Prince Endymion -- Mamoru, AKA Tuxedo Mask. From there, she saves the world multiple times, avenging the Moon Kingdom against a restored Beryl and Queen Metallia, before saving the universe from numerous other threats.

Usagi ends up being confronted by two future incarnations of herself, which makes matters only more confusing. This indicates Usagi's cycle of reincarnation continues on into the depths of time itself. Usagi takes on four different transformations: Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Moon, Princess Sailor Moon and Eternal Sailor Moon, all of which grant her new levels of power. Some translations refer to her as Serena or Bunny, but these are not different incarnations.

Neo-Queen Serenity is not truly a new incarnation of Usagi, but rather her future self. After reaching adulthood, Usagi revives the Moon Kingdom into a new era of peace and prosperity. Creating a new capital known as Crystal Tokyo, Usagi becomes the ruler of the entire planet, with King Endymion -- Mamoru -- at her side.

Neo-Queen Serenity gives birth to Chibiusa, eradicates the process of aging, all while continuing to protect the planet. While she can no longer transform into a Sailor Guardian, she is far stronger than Usagi, capable of using the Silver Crystal to eradicate the concept of death. That said, she can be beaten, as seen when Death Phantom attempts to conquer the future and past.

Sailor Cosmos is an entity that exists in the far-off reaches of existence. She never appears in the original anime, but is present in the manga. Sailor Cosmos exists in a far-off future, where the entity Chaos, who has plagued Usagi throughout her various incarnations, manifests as a Sailor Guardian. In order to stop Chaos, Cosmos travels back in time to eradicate Chaos at its source: the Galaxy Cauldron.

Ultimately, Sailor Cosmos plans to eradicate the source of life in the universe to depower Chaos. Her prior incarnation, Usagi, convinces her to not go forward with her plan. She takes the form of Chibi-Chibi during the majority of her time traveling in order to remain hidden. Chibi-Chibi appears in the original anime but is actually Sailor Galaxia's Star Seed, not Usagi.

Sailor Cosmos is a mysterious entity in Sailor Moon lore, in part because no one really knows who she is or what point in the future she comes from. Sailor Ceres calls her a far future incarnation of Sailor Moon, but some fans speculate she might be an even older version of Neo-Queen Serenity. It is uncertain if Sailor Cosmos is the reincarnation of Usagi or, perhaps, a reincarnation of a future reincarnation of Usagi. All that is known, however, is that Sailor Cosmos is Usagi at nearly godlike levels of power.
